It is an herbaceous plant typical of tropical areas. It grows horizontally on the ground and because of its medical importance especially in folk medicine has been successfully cultivated in many other parts of the world. Some monographs of the plant mainly describe its wound-healing and memory-enhancing effects.
In addition to the neuroprotective effect of C. asiatica has been reported to possess a wide range of biological activities, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, hepatoprotective, immunostimulant, antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant, and in venous insufficiency. Most of these important activities are attributable to the presence of triterpene derivatives, including asiatic acid, madecassic acid, asiaticoside, madecassoside, and brahmic acid, and polysaccharides, flavonoids, quercetin, rutin, and apigenin.
