It is native to India and Ceylon, the drug consists of the bark of young branches and is recognized by being found in double coiled tubes of various lengths. Characteristic is its aromatic smell as well as its taste. It is distinguished by being particularly rich in parenchyma cells in characteristic aldehydes, eugenol and mucilage, also by its concentrations of tannins it manifests astringent and tonic action.
It stimulates the nervous system and is antiseptic, anthelmintic. It regularizes intestinal transit, is antioxidant, promotes elimination of intestinal gas, enters into carbohydrate metabolism.
